Older people

The old cliché ‘it’s too late to stop, the damage is done’ just isn’t true. Research shows that no matter when you choose to give up, be it 18 or 80 years of age, the benefits are there to be experienced by all. There is EVERY POINT in giving up as the benefits start as soon as you throw away your last cigarette.

Here’s a list of reasons why you should plan to give up smoking:

  • You will not only begin to feel healthier but you will also look and smell better.
  • You will have the energy to be more active so you will have a better quality of life.
  • You will have less smoking-related illness such as sore throats and chest infections.
  • Any medication you take may be more effective when you stop smoking. Talk to your doctor before you quit.

There is no better time to give up than now.

If you are reading this you are probably thinking about giving up. You may have tried to stop smoking in the past and not succeeded. Don’t be anxious about trying again.

Help is at hand – there is lots of advice on this website in the how do I give up section and you can phone the HSE Quit Team on Freephone 1800 201 203 or FREETEXT QUIT to 50100 to talk to a stop smoking advisor. They can also give you contact details of your nearest one-to-one support service.

There are treatments that can help you to quit and are free on prescription if you have a medical card.

Remember – it’s never too late to stop smoking. Good luck!
